ATAF is the Mobility Authority managing the public transport in the Florence Metropolitan Area. About 1.400 people, of which 990 drivers, work in ATAF. Qualified ATAF’s employers work on planning and management of innovative transport services, in collaboration with local administration and association to satisfy different users needs (e.g. services for elderly and disabled people). By that, different type of services are provided by ATAF from the conventional mass transport to on user demand service (Demande Responsive Transport Services – DRTs, Collective taxi, Special user groups service). These complementary/innovative services allow to answer to the mobility needs of citizens groups or specific rural/urban area that are not served or not well served by the conventional transport services (with fixed lines and time-tables). ATAF operates the DRTs for elderly and disabled people in the overall Metropolitan Area and has developed the Telematic architecture of Flexible mobility agency for disabled people in collaboration with the Florence Municipality, the Tuscany Region and local D&E associations. ATAF has long experience in planning and development of public transport network both in the Florence Metropolitan area and in other Italian sites. ATAF is also responsible for the realisation of a new Tramway system based on three main tram lines: the first one is 7,5 km long and will be operative in 2009.
From the technological standpoint ATAF makes use of the high level of ICT technologies and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) such as Fleet Monitoring & User Information (AVM - 433 equipped busses), Integrated Payment (IPS - contact and contact-less smart card), Travel Dispatch Centre (TDC - rural and urban areas), Flexible Mobility Agency and Portal (booking and management, notification to users by sms, information, etc.). A large CNG fleet (144 vehicles and two CNG refuelling depots) and Electric minibus fleet (26 vehicles) completes the ATAF’s profile. Never less, ATAF’s buses are equipped with special devices for the users with mobility impairments and/or wheelchair users.
