The Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) is one of the largest research centers of Greece with well organised facilities and highly qualified staff. It functions under the supervision of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology of the Hellenic Ministry of Development. The Foundation, with its high quality research results as well as its valuable socioeconomic contribution, makes it one of the top research centers internationally.
The Institute of Computer Science (FORTH-ICS), one of the seven institutes of FORTH, has a relatively long history and recognized tradition, since its establishment in 1983, in conducting basic and applied research, developing applications and products, providing services, and playing a leading role in Greece and internationally, in the fields of Information and Communication Technologies. Activities of ICS cover important research and development areas, taking into consideration new perspectives, emerging fields of research and technological challenges worldwide. Continuing its efforts towards the exploitation of its research activities and results, the Institute contributes significantly to the diffusion of modern Information and Communications Technologies in the public and private sectors. Thus, ICS acts as a catalyst for the development of the Information and Communication Technologies sector in Greece and the formation of favourable conditions for the emergence of an Information Society acceptable by all citizens.
FORTH-ICS has recently introduced it’s Ambient Intelligence (AMI) Programme which aims at improving the quality of life of all citizens of the emerging Information Society and promoting the vision of independent living through the creation and provision of safe, efficient and user-friendly AMI technologies, which support and cater to the needs of each and every individual user in a seamless, unobtrusive and invisible way. In principle, the AMI Programme of FORTH-ICS will constitute a platform for cooperative research towards developing and studying AMI-related technologies and assessing their impact on the individual, as well as society as a whole, but also as a unique showcase for demonstrating the potential, added-value and benefits of AMI technologies in different aspects of everyday life and activities. In this direction, the AMI Programme aims to realise a link for technology transfer/know-how dissemination to industrial actors.
