Newcastle University has an excellent pedigree in research and teaching and is closely integrated into the economic, cultural and social life of the North East of England. It possesses a strong and vibrant interdisciplinary research base and an annual income of £249.8m. The institute for Ageing and Health at Newcastle University is Europe’s leading research institute for clinical and biological research into ageing, and works closely with the Informatics research Institute in the development of new and appropriate technologies for supporting older people’s independent living. The Transport Operations Research Group (TORG) was established in 1972 and is now within the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, part of SAGE. It is regarded as one of the foremost centres of transport research in Europe. Recent research has been sponsored by the European Commission, UK Government Departments (DfT, ODPM and DTI), local authorities, Passenger Transport Executives, bus companies, research councils and consulting firms. Professor Phil Blythe was a member of the European Commission's 'Expert Team' responsible for the definition of the fourth framework programme on Advanced Transport Telematics, and also participated in the integration review of the 3rd Framework. Working closely with Dr Olivier of the Informatics Research Institute and the Institute of Ageing and Health his portfolio covers a wide range of areas where ITS has been applied to transport, including: road to vehicle communications; road user charging and toll systems; ITS for assistive mobility, smartcards and RFID, wireless/smartdust technologies and future intelligent infrastructure. His forward looking research attempts to bridge the technology-policy gap in terms of what technologies may evolve to meet future policy objectives or indeed influence future policy thinking.

  • Trip planning and localisation (WP3.2, WP3.3), leading pilot framework planning and set-up (WP.4.4).
  • Operation of pilot site (WP4.6).
  • Lead of WP5.5 and design methodology development (WP5.5).
